Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Today is my dad's birthday. 

He's the greatest. 

He is just so jolly. 

I love that he says WARSH instead of Wash.

I love his "funny" jokes. 

I love that he's always calling his kids just to say hello even if it's just for a minute.

He is just a genuinely nice guy. 

I love being his favorite #6. 

I love that he had the courage to join the LDS Church. 

I love that he married my mom in the temple so we can be a family forever.

He's a great husband, father, and grandfather.

West Sisters Weekly

So, Ie Li does a sisters' update with Steve's side of the family and I've been wanting to do it with the West sisters for a long time, so here is the premiere of West Sisters Weekly.

Ie Mei:

This Week:

• Spent every morning at the club watching Jackson and lance at tennis camp/watching Mylee and Ailee scooter and play at the playground while I tried to get to know a very nice mother of five from Bolivia.
• Spent four hours working with my Spanish tutor, Liliana.
• Exercised a couple times before the kids got up :)
• Had a tennis date with Brad and popped our tire on the way home.
• Taught Lumy, a young adult in our ward, how to make funeral potatoes.
• Prepared the funeral potatoes and homemade rolls for the five American missionaries in our ward.  Had fun --watching them devour the rolls and potatoes - foods they don't get very often in Mexico.
• Finalized the deal on a 2007 Passat.  I'm about to be a Mexican driver.

Next Week:

Vanessa:

This week:

• I took the kids to the Reptacular Animal exhibit and show at our local libraries.
• Devin got to hold an albino, Burmese python and Marina got to hold a canary. 
• On Friday nite, after an arduous week of earning 10 happy faces, Devin and Marina received the honor of accompanying mom and dad on our date nite to the Thousand Oaks Philaharmonics featuring youth soloist from the community.  The musicians were brilliant and the kids loved it.

Next week:

• our usual summer activities of piano, ballet, tennis, and swimming
• We are looking forward to heading out to the beach with family on Saturday.

Ie Li:

Last week:

• Swam
• Took the kids to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum on Wednesday
• Had a piano delivered to our house on Friday
• Summer school
• Played in puddles.
• Played in the sprinklers.
• Had dessert and played a game with Christine, John, Rachel, and Ken.
• Mei Li had princess ballet camp, which afforded me a few hours in the week to take two children to stores instead of three.  It makes a big difference.  I think Stephen enjoyed being the big boy.
• Got up at least a half hour before the kids woke up everyday.  I am hoping to make this a permanent habit.
• Made whole wheat bread with my new mixer.  The results were less than stellar.  I need to practice some more.
• Made pretzels as a family on Saturday.
• Attended the Redskins fan appreciation day on Saturday.

Next week:

• Go to Cafe Rio.  As much as I love Cafe Rio, I haven't been to either of the DC area ones that recently opened up.  I think I'll do that tomorrow.
• Search for a mirror and artwork.
• Another trip to the Air and Space Museum?  
• Summer school
• Swim
• Get up early and go to bed early
• Pack and go to the lake house in Pennsylvania with Rachel, Ken, and Christine (maybe John?)

Michiko:

This last week, I:

• got to hang out with Jonathan!  He's awesome, and I love the man he has grown to become.  I'm so super proud of his amazing study habits and achievements of this last semester! Nerds unite!  :B
• got to go to Ulta without kids.  I never go shopping, but I needed an anniversary present for the Jer-bear.  What do you get the guy who already buys himself whatever he wants?!  No, seriously.  What do you buy that guy?!  I bought some cologne, but I'll need ideas for later.  :)
• bought a few extras for myself while at Ulta!  I took advantage of Uncle Jonathan, who was patiently watching movies in the car with the boys.  After I settled on a cologne, I scanned the aisles super quick for something for me!  I had a 20% off coupon, I had to maximize it, you know?!  I found 2 things I'm excited about - a salt spray for my unruly hair, and RED lipstick!  I've always wanted to wear red lips, but have never been daring enough to try it.  What's the verdict, sistahs?!
• celebrated anniversary #11!  Jonathan watched the kids and put them down for bed so Jeremy and I could have a romantic date.  We went all-out for our 11th and drove to the city of love . . .  Stockton!  We hit the teacher supply store AND REI and held hands the whole time like love-sick teens.  :)  I know, I know, it's all too much, but wait!  There's more!  We had sushi and stayed out til 10 pm!  Kuh-raizy.  Just wait til you hear what we have planned for next year! (I kid, but Jeremy really did spoil me - he got me 2 new lenses for my camera and patio furniture for the back.  I can sit while I watch kids in the pool now!)
• finally got the primary program written!  That was a big load off my shoulders!

Next Week:

• celebrate Maika's 10th birthday!  It's going to be an EPIC party - even bigger than our anniversary!  We might get balloons!  And I think we are going to invite Maika's WHOLE classroom.  (Shhhh.  It's a surprise!)
• (Do I have any hope of the kids not resenting me when they get older?!)
• get passport applications submitted!  Both parents need to be present, and for having a husband that doesn't work Fridays, you'd think that would be easier to accomplish.
• make a loose D.C. itinerary and figure out which places I need reservations for.  
• mail Primary letters to the Elders serving in our ward. 
• try some vegetarian meals out on the boys - wish me luck!
• go to Benjamin Moore and pick another color for my kitchen.  I had high hopes for Martha's "enamelware" color, but it wasn't quite right.  I think I'm on try 6 or 7!  Who knew picking a blue could be so hard!

• worked 8 hours in front of a computer in one day. Major headache.
• had so many girls' nights because Blakers was on family vacation this week in Oregon.
• found a house to live in for the fall. Private Room. Piano. Theater Room!
• de-cluttered my closet with the help of my trusty friend, Martha.
• bought some  M.A.C. Fluidline in Dipdown. I would highly recommend it =)
• sported the side fish braid more than once. ( I also recommend this. It stays in much better than a regular one.)

Next Week:

• take a final for Business Law.
• spend an evening at Seven Peaks with Blakers for the first time since I was...five?
• Pack up all my stuff and clean.
• Run the Moonlight half marathon in my new shoes! (see post below)
• Fly to California for Beach Week!

Best Friends

Ever since I was born, I've had a best friend. His name is Jonathan Reagan West. He has always taken care of me.

Today he is 23 years old. 

We're less than two years apart and I hear that we never fought and that we used to play really well together. 

We still do. 

We have a lot of memories together. Like in pre-school when our school put on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. As you can see, I'm a lovely little flower. Jonathan was Doc. I remember Mom made our costumes. Jonathan wore a white beard and stuffed a pillow under his shirt so he would have a round belly.

 We danced and sang together. Ie Mei got married when I was 8 and Jonathan was 10. We sang at her wedding. You know that cute little rendition of L-O-V-E from The Little Rascals that Waldo and Darla perform? Yeah. We sang that. 

I am so lucky to have such a wonderful brother who I get along with and who always takes care of me. He is one of the most kind, caring, intelligent, loving boys I know. He is a great brother, son, uncle and friend. I am so proud of him and all the hard work he has done throughout his life. He is a great example to me. Happy Birthday Jonathan! I love you!

My Life in a Collage: Number Two.

My 100th Post

This is blog post number 100. That's crazy. Probably a very small number for someone who's had a blog for about four years, but an accomplishment nonetheless. So, I think for my 100th post I will write about when I turned 21. Two milestones in my life. I spent my twenty-first birthday in Boise, ID with the Day family and it was an amazing weekend away from school and work. Blake and I took a picture before we left:

The second take was better.

We got some snacks and drinks and we were on our way.  After a couple hours we were in Idaho.

 We went straight to Mason(Blake's brother)'s basketball game in Les Bois and met up with Blake's parents. We had some pizza for dinner and then headed to Tyler(Blake's other brother)'s Varsity basketball game. We arrived back at Blake's home and started watching Despicable Me with Mason in the media room, but I soon fell asleep, so we decided to call it a night.

Friday started out with a morning walk with Diane. She told me lots of fun stories of how she met Stephen and stories about little Blake that melted my heart. After we got ready for the day, Blake took me on a mini tour of Boise and we picked up Tyler from high school for a little lunch date. It was so weird walking through the halls of Capital High School because it was nothing like my high school. First of all, there are boys there. Second, there aren't uniforms. Third, everything else was different. I told Blake it was like a kind of high school you see in the TV shows with inside hallways and lockers and sophomore couples walking hand in hand in the hallway. WEIRD.

We went to a cute little ice cream/burger joint called Delsa's.

I love ice. Delsa's has good ice. I love Delsa's. 

We went to Sakura for dinner that night and had some sushi and tepanyaki. I'm really good at catching the shrimp. I'm 3 for 3. We went to see The Eagle and then finished Despicable Me. We made an executive decision to celebrate Mindy's and my birthday starting at 7 AM and then I went to bed. Blake woke me up at 7 AM sharp and everyone sang happy birthday to me as I walked into the kitchen. I had candles in my homemade cheesecake and I made a wish as I blew them out. There were two piles of presents on either side of the kitchen table. One for me and one for Mindy. After we opened our presents some of us got ready for the Worldwide Leadership Training and enjoyed that meeting for a couple hours. 

We played some fun games in between lunch and dinner: The Game of Things... and The Wrong game. I would recommend them. They are pretty fun. Then it was time for the special birthday dinner at The Mona Lisa. I've never been to a fondue restaurant, but it was simply wonderful. I ate way too much, but I'm allowed to do that on my birthday. 

That's our pot of turtle fondue. Delicious. My favorite chocolate was the white chocolate with vanilla caramel and toffee bits. 

Throughout the day I received so many wonderful messages and phone calls from my wonderful family and friends. Thank you all for making it such a special day. I love being twenty-one!

On Sunday we had some homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast and went to church. We were able to hear Diane say a few words during the combined Priesthood/Relief Society meeting and I met so many family friends. The ward members couldn't say enough nice things about Blake. It was such a wonderful weekend and one I will always remember. 

October 16

October 16 is the birthday of two very special people in my life:

1. My dear sister, Ie Mei and

2. My oldest nephew, Jackson.

I think it's so special that my sister had her first child on her birthday. What could be better than that?

Yesterday was their birthday and I just want to say a few things about them.

Ie Mei is one of the kindest people I know. She is so helpful to everyone and has been such a role model to me growing up. I vaguely remember having sleepovers with her in her college dorm when I was four. I remember all the summers I spent with her, watching her cook and sew and thinking that she was the best mom and wife ever and how I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. Well, I'm pretty grown up these days and I still want to be like her. She teaches me so much still and I love her a lot. Happy Birthday, Overflowing Joy, I love you!

And then there's Jackson Jay. Yesterday he turned eleven. ELEVEN!!!!!! I can't believe it. I've spent a lot of time with Jackson Jay. I remember his Elmo phase and his BYU football phase. I remember the first summer I spent with them in Logan and on the car ride back to their house he pointed to the star-shaped decals on my nails and said the word, "dars" (stars). I remember how happy I was when he called me "aunt" for the first time. Jackson, I love being your aunt and love being a part of your life. Happy Birthday. 

OH CANADA

I was doing so well for a while there, but it's now been almost 3 weeks since my last post. I know I have lots of disappointed readers. Ha. Anyway, reasons why I've been busy: school, church, work (yeah! I have a job! That is not the reason for this post, so I'll write about that later), and wedding festivities!

So, a little more than a year ago I was about to start my sophomore year and knew zero Canadians. A year later and I have Canadians as best friends. So, this post is for my dear friend, Cassie (MacLennan) Tremblay. She got engaged in July and I couldn't wait to be a part of planning and shopping. She threw the most lovely bridal shower for our friend, Jennica, so I wanted to do the same for her.

Two weeks ago, Jennica, Kylie, and I threw a bridal shower for Cassie. The food consisted of cake balls, spinach artichoke dip, fruit and dip, and a beautiful punch.

The rest of the evening consisted of games, prizes, presents, and laughs and smiles with friends. 

It was so much fun to put together and I hope Cassie enjoyed it =). 

The next week, Kylie, Payton, and I started our drive to Alberta, Canada at 4 PM on a Thursday. We arrived at 3 AM and boy, was it good to be out of the car. The next day, Kylie and I spent the morning hunting with our friend Ben.

 I must say I'm extremely bad at hunting because 

1. I can't hit anything and

2. it breaks my heart to see lifeless animals. 

After hunting, I ran some errands with Cassie and Ben and then we went over to Kylie's house for family dinner. 

Then it was time for the girls to spend some time together and do some girly things. I painted a total of 82 nails that night, but it was the least I could do for Cassie. 

I also did her makeup for her big day. I think it turned out well. She is stunning, isn't she?

We made our way to the Cardston temple and waited for Mr. and Mrs. Ben Tremblay to exit.

We danced. 

We said goodbye to the happy couple as they ran through our tunnel of sparklers.  

The festivities were fun and beautiful, but seeing them walk out of the temple was the best part. I can't wait to find that special someone who will take me to the temple so we can be married for time and all eternity. 

A Place of Love and Beauty

The title of this post comes from a beloved primary song: I Love to See the Temple. This is a very true statement. I had a wonderful opportunity this morning to go to the Los Angeles temple with my dad and brother to perform baptisms for the dead. All temple trips are special, but this trip was unlike any other I've experienced. 

Whenever I go to the temple I just use the names they have on hand--I've never done family names. But today that changed. It was such a special experience. I was able to be baptized for both of my grandmothers and two of my great-grandmothers. As I was baptized I thought of them and how happy they might be. I thought of my mom's mom who had the most beautiful smile and who I spent a lot of time with in high school when she lived with us on occasion. And then I thought of my dad's mom who I've only seen pictures of--she passed away before I was born. It was the most wonderful feeling and I can only imagine them smiling and being so happy because of the events that took place today. I feel just a little bit closer to them, even though they're far away. 

Jonathan was also able to be baptized for my two grandfathers and I know that it was special for him too. I was getting dressed when Jonathan was being baptized and confirmed, but when it was time to go Jonathan said that my dad got quite emotional when he performed the confirmation for his father. My dad has a very soft heart and I know that it was such a special experience for him to be able to do this for his parents. 

I'm so grateful for the opportunity I had to do baptisms for my family members. I'm grateful for this gospel that has been restored on the earth by the prophet Joseph Smith. I'm grateful for temples and the work that is done there. I know this is the true church and that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet today. I'm so happy that families can be together forever.
